Week 7: Assignment 1

Reflection on article " Theories and Practices of  Multimodal Education: The  Instructional Dynamics of Picture  Books and Primary Classrooms:" With the advancements of technology and digital literacies, multimodal texts have replaced regular text. In other words,  the words on the page are not the only way to understand the text. Various features, including the  layout, font, images and more, help convey the meaning, as well. In order for teachers to help students use multimodal tools, they  must undertake new roles. In addition to their current roles, educators need to become resource managers, designer consultants, and co-constructors  of knowledge, as well. In this way, they can help their students develop the skills necessary in this technological era. Reflection on article "Using the ADDIE Model to Design Second Life Activities for Online Learners:" Technology can be used as a  learning tool or as a distraction. Therefore, educato...

Week 6 Assignment 2:1

The article " Middle School Science Teachers’ Confidence and Pedagogical Practice  of New Literacies," discussed why technology is often not implemented enough in the classroom. Many teachers understand that technology is important yet don't use it, mainly due to lack of technological resources and  lack of confidence on their part.  I agree that is important to use technology as an educational tool in the classroom. Therefore, schools should ensure that there is  access to technology. In addition, teachers should attend workshops to learn how to implement technology in their classroom. Since technology keeps on advancing, it is important to remain up to date and keep on attending workshops to make the most of what technology has to offer. The second article, " Using S ocial N etworking S ites to Facilitate T eaching and L earning,"  emphasizes  the importance of implementing ICT'S and discusses how social media sites, such as Edmodo, are user friendl...

Using Edmodo in the classroom is a great way to enhance the learning experience. First, technology motivates students and engages them in the lesson. In addition, in this way, learning is not limited to school. Students can use Edmodo in their free time, as well. Students also learn to collaborate with their peers and use technology correctly. Edmodo also has excellent features that improve the learning experience. For example, the quiz feature provides teachers with an easy way to create and grade quizzes. Teachers can choose from different formats, including fill-ins, multiple choice, short answers, and matching, according to their preferences. Students enjoy using it as they get to see how they did  right away. Another feature, discover allows teachers to access all types of educational resources which they can use to improve instruction. The calendar is used to help students stay organized and informed of upcoming deadlines, tests and events. The library is where teacher...

Week 5 Assignment 2: My Philosophy on Gaming

I believe that gaming and game design can be used as an effective educational tool. To begin with, since students are growing up in the twenty first century surrounded by technology, it is a great motivator. Therefore, using games is a smart way to engage students in learning.   Furthermore, it helps them develop technological and computational thinking skills, both which are valuable skills for the future. Students also learn how to effectively communicate and collaborate with peers. Moreover, it is an accurate way to assess students’ progress. Many students don’t perform well under pressure and freeze when tested in a formal setting. However, when playing a game, students don’t feel the pressure of being assessed, so teachers can use that to accurately determine whether they mastered the material or not. However, there are some downsides to gaming as well. Technology can pose as a distraction and prevent students from learning. Therefore, it is important for teachers to...

Week 4 Assignments

Assignment 1: The game Carrie the Caregiver is a great way to teach students time management skills and responsibility. The game does not include much text aside from the instructions and how much points gained or lost. Players see what the baby needs by the thought bubbles with pictures coming from the crying babies. The visual-graphic elements include everything in 3D and the player drags Carrie and the babies around to perform the tasks. The audio elements include music playing and babies screaming in the background to give the game a realistic feel and engage the player in the game. The goal of the game is to keep the babies happy and attend to their needs quickly. The rules are to drag Carrie around to perform the tasks and to make each baby happy before it is too late. This is a fabricated scenario design. It is an enjoyable and engaging way to teach students time management skills. Assignment 2: Grade level   Grade 1 Common cores standards and learning outcomes ...
