Week 7: Assignment 1

Reflection on article "Theories and Practices of Multimodal Education: The Instructional Dynamics of Picture Books and Primary Classrooms:"

With the advancements of technology and digital literacies, multimodal texts have replaced regular text. In other words,  the words on the page are not the only way to understand the text. Various features, including the  layout, font, images and more, help convey the meaning, as well. In order for teachers to help students use multimodal tools, they must undertake new roles. In addition to their current roles, educators need to become resource managers, designer consultants, and co-constructors of knowledge, as well. In this way, they can help their students develop the skills necessary in this technological era.

Reflection on article "Using the ADDIE Model to Design Second Life Activities for Online Learners:"

Technology can be used as a  learning tool or as a distraction. Therefore, educators must determine which technology to use to facilitate learning . Second Life is an online virtual learning environment which has both  benefits and disadvantages for learning. Some pros of second life include that students can experiment with and use things that can't be seen in real life.  In addition, since users are represented by avatars, there is a social presence, as well. On the other hand, Second Life is difficult to implement since very high-end software is needed for it to work. Moreover, the class cannot be locked and anyone can enter and disrupt the class. Before making use of this platform, teachers must weigh  all the pros and cons to determine whether Second Life should be used in the classroom.

  2. You brought up an important point about how intruders can interrupt the lesson since the class cannot be locked. This can present a real concern, particularly with classes of younger students where you want a safe and controllable learning environment. Perhaps SL will create an option to lock classes. This would make the website a far more appealing option for teachers to use.

  3. Really well thought out responses. I also felt the same way about other people coming tin to learning environment which seems unsafe for students.
I also appreciate the amount of ways listed in which students learn and how teachers need to change with with times.
