Week 5 Assignment 2: My Philosophy on Gaming

I believe that gaming and game design can be used as an effective educational tool. To begin with, since students are growing up in the twenty first century surrounded by technology, it is a great motivator. Therefore, using games is a smart way to engage students in learning.  Furthermore, it helps them develop technological and computational thinking skills, both which are valuable skills for the future. Students also learn how to effectively communicate and collaborate with peers. Moreover, it is an accurate way to assess students’ progress. Many students don’t perform well under pressure and freeze when tested in a formal setting. However, when playing a game, students don’t feel the pressure of being assessed, so teachers can use that to accurately determine whether they mastered the material or not.

However, there are some downsides to gaming as well. Technology can pose as a distraction and prevent students from learning. Therefore, it is important for teachers to constantly assess and monitor students to see whether they are learning or not. In addition, teachers must be very familiar with new technology and educate themselves in the tools available so they can use them correctly in the classroom.

In my classroom, I plan on using gaming and game design to provide my students with an enriching educational experience.
